Early Start Nursery

NRSB’s Early Start Nursery is a full time nursery designed specifically to give blind and partially sighted children a better start in life – providing them with the confidence they need for a brighter future.

The nursery provides free places to vision impaired children and has a number of places for other children at very competitive rates so that sighted children and vision impaired children can learn and play together in an inclusive environment.

Many vision impaired children have “Tactile Defensive Tendencies” which means that they shy away from touching anything that is new to them.   It is essential for the staff at the nursery to help the children to overcome these tendencies if they are to be empowered to get the most out of life.  Vision impaired children must develop an acute sense of touch if they are to go on to lead independent lives.  Play sessions provide lots of tactile play with a variety of strange and unusual materials with the intention of preventing tactile defensiveness and encouraging tactile curiosity. Each vision-impaired child is assigned their own key worker, who is responsible for developing an individual work programme based on the child’s personal needs.

The nursery’s activity area is used for a range of activities including painting; playing with toys and games; singing, story telling and exploratory play.  The activities are designed to help children with all round personal development, concentrating on physical, intellectual, linguistic, emotional, social and cultural needs.

The nursery’s Multi Sensory Room serves to relax and calm children as well as to excite and stimulate: The nursery works with each vision impaired child on the premise that they have some visual recognition.  The staff will work with all the visual stimulation the nursery has to try to kick-start the area of the brain that processes visual information.  Unless this area of the brain is stimulated early enough a vision impaired child’s brain may switch off from all visual stimuli, resulting in total blindness.

The Early Start Nursery is a small, friendly nursery with a family atmosphere situated in a fully secure building only 5 minutes from Nottingham city centre which is popular with local parents and those who work in the city..  The nursery is Ofsted registered for children from birth to 5 years of age and is very competitively priced.
