Goalball has come to the county in the guise of a newly created club – the Nottinghamshire Sheriffs.
A joint venture between the University of Nottingham and the NRSB, the club has been running since October 2010 and competed in its first regional tournament in Sheffield only a month later!
Goalball is a sport that will be featuring in the London 2012 Paralympics Games. The teams are made up of three people and all the players in the team wear eye shades allowing anyone to play the game. The aim of the Sheriffs is to give local people and the University community the opportunity to experience a sport that is a fast and fun, great for your coordination, strength and fitness.
The club is open to anyone interested in playing Goalball and is over the age of 14. Sessions will be held each week and last two hours all at a bargain price of £2 per session. We train on Saturdays between 11a.m. and 1p.m. at the University’s Sutton Bonington Sports Centre. Sessions run every fortnight.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve haven’t played Goalball before, if you’d like to give it a try then please come down to one of our sessions or contact Faye on (0115) 9706 806 or at fayed@nrsb.org.uk
The NRSB Knights are now in their third season. During the outdoor season the Knights played in monthly games against other visually impaired cricket teams, challenged sighted cricket teams to play Blind Cricket, hosted development days and entered into the Blind Cricket England and Wales Development Tournament held in September.
With 15 dedicated players the team continues to grow from strength to strength. Thurgarton Cricket Club has been confirmed as our home ground and a very generous donation from ITT Water and Wastewater has ensured a strong development programme was put in place over the remainder of the season and into 2012. During the winter we will be running a number of coaching and practice sessions. These will be held in the Sobers Hall at Trent Bridge cricket ground on the following dates;
We are constantly on the look-out for new players, and there is no better time to start in preparation for the upcoming season. There are no barriers to playing for the Knights, and you needn’t have played cricket before. So if you’re interested in playing, or know somebody who would be, please get in touch with Faye Dale, Sports and Healthy Lifestyles Officer.
In addition to the sports on offer we have developed a programme of accessible exercise and healthy living advice for all our service users. We are working to raise awareness of the benefits of healthy eating, especially the benefits to sight that eating the right foods can bring.
‘Organic Living’ is NRSB’s new gardening project, set up in March 2011. Located at Ortzen Street, the project has been designed to encourage people to start gardening. Alongside this, people will have the opportunity to harvest their own crops to take home. There will also be assistance with how to cook healthy meals and how eating healthier can benefit towards a healthy body and mind.
Weekly Thursday Gym and Swim sessions take place at the University of Nottingham Jubilee and Beeston sites. The sessions are open to all regardless of experience or current fitness levels. Staff are on hand to work with you to put together a fun and enjoyable programme that is sure to get you to your target goals.
In addition to the Gym and Swim sessions 2010 will see NRSB working alongside the NHS to run personal and confidential Health Risk Assessments. These assessments will give scope to inform individuals of their current health levels, how this may affect their quality of life and what changes they may or may not need to make to their everyday lives. Post Risk Assessment NRSB will be on hand to tailor a ‘Healthy Living Plan’ for each individual wishing to take part in the scheme.
