On Saturday 6th March six brave volunteers jumped out of a plane to raise money for NRSB! They flew to an amazing 13,500ft before freefalling for around 45 seconds and then gliding serenely down to the ground under their parachutes.
Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this event, which raised over £1,000 for NRSB!
Below is a report from Stephen Simons, who took part in the skydive. The photo with this report is of him and his instructor, Milko, and was taken by Tony Danbury at Skydive Langar.
Many, many thanks to everyone involved in allowing me to complete a tandem skydive at Langar Airfield on Saturday the 6th March.
I picked up a flyer (no pun intended) detailing the jump to support the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind exactly two weeks before the arranged date of the skydive and eleven days after the closing date for registration! Because of this I would like to expressly thank the fundraising team at NRSB in allowing me to jump on their behalf and helping me organise my fundraising with such a short space of time to do so. In particular I thank Cally Martin for her support throughout the whole experience.
Despite the closing date for registration having passed and with only a fortnight until the jump I realised that raising the minimum sponsorship of £395 would be a challenge, furthermore, I could not pick up the confirmation letter, information pack and sponsor form until the Wednesday and so in fact only giving me ten days to hit the target.
To this end I give such huge thanks to all of my family, friends and colleagues who were able to give an amount, however large or small and with their support and generosity I managed to sneak over the minimum sponsorship threshold eventually reaching £439! Thank you all.
My thanks go next to all the staff at Langar Airfield for facilitating and supporting the event and also to all of the other people who were there to commit to a 13,500 ft tandem skydive! Ally, who gave us our safety briefing, dispelled much of our fear by concluding that one of the most important things to remember is to look cool for the cameras! Not a very easy task when you are falling at 120mph for the first time, but I tried!
Particularly I would like to thank Milko, my tandem instructor for sharing with me a genuinely indescribable cocktail of feelings. The knowledge and skill he has commands such great respect from me and that respect is extended to all of the other skydivers I met that day. As a final accreditation I thank my cameraperson, Tony Danbury, who aside from having such skills as to photograph while in freefall has the best beard and purple jumpsuit combo you could ever hope to see!
